As part of a unit of study on “Human Consciousness and Sleep” the Year 11 Psychology students attended an excursion run by the Thoracic and Sleep Group QLD at the Wesley Hospital. The afternoon program included a short presentation from sleep clinicians, interactive sessions with ambulatory sleep equipment, as well as a tour of the sleep clinic.
A real highlight of the excursion was experiencing CPAP masks (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) which is a form of positive airway pressure ventilator. The students enjoyed the hands-on learning, and the time spent seeing brain waves, eye movements and body movements appear in real-time on the screen. Psychology is a new Senior Science subject which has been readily embraced by Northside students. In Year 11 Semester One, Psychology students study the role of the brain, cognitive development, human consciousness and sleep.
