Northside Musicals

By Bev Starrenburg, College Archivist

The tradition of musicals began in the very first year of the school in 1985.

Though there were only a small number of students, Agapeland was performed at a Sunday night service at Northside church and at the Chermside Aged care Home.

The tradition of annual performances had begun!

In the following years, the Junior School continued to perform an annual musical and, at the end of a year, a Nativity play.

In 1995, the first of the biennial Secondary musicals began with the performance of ‘A Dangerous Journey’.

Since 1999, there has been the now-familiar pattern of a P-6 Junior School Variety Concert in even years and a Secondary musical in odd years. The Junior School concerts provide the opportunity for every student in the Junior School to be on stage at least once – no small feat!

In addition, there is an annual Lower Junior School Nativity performance for every student in that area of the college. This performance has become a highlight of the end-of-year celebrations.

As the time for the 2023 Musical approaches, it seems to be a good time to present a visual history of the NCC Secondary Musicals.

There have been too many people to individually acknowledge and thank for the high standard of these productions but I want to honour them collectively in this article. Thank you for the many hours that each one has given.

Below is a chronological list of the major secondary musical productions. It is worth noting at this point that there have also been many other focused performances (such as instrumental and vocal events) that are not acknowledged in this article.

Help would be appreciated for photos of the musicals for which I found few photos. If you have them, I would love for you to contact me at the College, especially if you can identify which musical it is.
